The Quartz Bikepacking Route
When: Saturday, 30 May to Sunday, 31 May, 2026
Location: Mingela / Ravenswood, Charters Towers Region, North Queensland
Leaders: Luen and Geoff
Grade: 5 - hard, due to distance, remoteness, self-sufficiency, and navigation
Distance: Approx. 185 km over two days
Bike type: Gravel bike, adventure bike, or similar
Surface: Mixed bitumen, gravel, dirt roads, sandy/water crossings and rougher adventurous sections

OPTION 1 - Full bikepacking ride from Townsville

This option is for those keen on the full bikepacking experience. Riders will leave from Mingela, riding to Ravenswood & Clare. Then the following day, continue riding on to Townsville.
High-vis clothing and bike lights are strongly recommended.
OPTION 2 - Day trip or car camping option

This option is for those who would prefer to drive out, optionally set up camp, and enjoy day rides in the area. This option is ideal for anyone keen to join the trip's social side and explore by bike without committing to the full ride.

Wilfred's regular Tuesday Mt Stuart road walk is open to club members who want a solid pre-dawn fitness hit. We will meet at 4:45 am and walk the bitumen road all the way to the 584 m summit and back, covering approximately 15 km return. This is a self-paced, steady uphill grind followed by a controlled descent - ideal for building endurance and leg strength. We walk up for 1.5 hours, which usually means we rest at the top and then go back down again ~1.5 hours.

Join Cherry for a challenging full-day walk to the summit of Mount Halifax, one of the highest and most prominent peaks north of Townsville. Rising to 1,063 metres, Mount Halifax is the mountain often seen behind the pineapple farms near Rollingstone and from the Bruce Highway on the way to Paluma.

Sitting at 783 metres elevation, Godwin's Peak offers spectacular 360-degree views across Mount Halifax, Townsville, the coastline, Mount Stuart, Castle Hill, Magnetic Island, and the surrounding ranges on a clear day.
