We are heading back into the rainforest for a full-day off-track creek adventure linking Little Birthday Creek to Big Birthday Creek in the Mt Spec area. This is a remote wilderness bushwalk with sustained creek walking, rock hopping, slippery granite, tangled vines and the usual North Queensland surprises underfoot. Expect to be in and out of the water for much of the day.
The plan is to explore upstream and downstream sections of the Birthday Creek system, navigating through cool rainforest corridors and sculpted creek lines. These walks are about immersion - moving through water, negotiating boulders, making route decisions on the go and enjoying pockets of pristine Paluma that most people never see.
This is rated moderate. Participants must have solid fitness and be comfortable with 4 hours on foot in off-track terrain - think slippery rainforest creek rocks and swimming. Waterproof everything - phone, keys, food. Sturdy enclosed footwear with good grip is essential. Long sleeves recommended, gaiters optional.
Bring at least 2 L of water (or treat creek water if refilling), half-day food, electrolytes, a personal first-aid kit, a head torch, and a whistle.
Meeting details will be emailed to those who RSVP. If conditions are unsuitable, the route may be modified at the leader’s discretion.
Rainforest creeks, slippery rocks and character-building fun - this is Paluma at its best.
Townsville Bushwalking Club members: Free
Visitors: $5 per walk. After completing three club walks, you are welcome to join as a member.
