The next Club walk will be held on 15 May to Paradise Beach & Castle Rock. Wilfred Karnoll is the leader
The walk commences at the end of Cape Cleveland Road and follows a rough, but well-defined track around the perimeter of AIMS and hits the northern end of the AIMS beach. From there it's up and over the saddle, and through the coastal forest to the Little Beach. Again, this is a marked track and ascends about 60 m at the most. Enjoy the views once you get to the saddle of Little Beach and beyond.
The shoreline has changed so much at Little Beach since we first went there in the early 2010s after the big monsoonal rains about 4 years ago. It's still a beautiful little spot though. About half way along the beach a second creek flows down to it and you'll make your way up the creek then cross over to the northern bank and follow the track all the way to the second saddle. There is a great lookout to your right , but it's a little bit off the beaten track. The descent to Paradise Beach is straight forward and follows a track.
Castle Rock is at the northern end of the beach, you will either enjoy a long stroll along the beach followed by a very steep ascent to the Rock or cut inland in order to take a more gradual ascent to Castle Rock. Don't worry you'll still get the steep scramble at the end no matter which way you go! Your heart rate will be ever so elevated by the time you hit the high point and see spectacular views to the north and south of you. Enjoy your lunch at the summit and prepare yourself for the journey back to the cars. The return journey largely follows the same route, but there are often a couple of alternative routes to use to leave Castle Rock. Whatever you do, don't be tempted if the word "Balancing" is used. That's another story though.
What do you bring? Well, it's the usual requirements for a day walk. Hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. Long sleeved shirts, long trousers or shorts with gaiters will protect you from the sun and scratches. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, plus sundry snacks to sustain you throughout the day. First aid kit and a snake bandage are always essentials. Camera. Togs & towel to have a swim at Paradise Beach.
Water. I would suggest 3 - 4 L as it will be a long walk and although there has been recent rain we have never assumed the water supply is reliable.
Please call Wilfred to nominate for the walk or email Contact info@townsvillebushwalkingclub. Wilfred reserves the right to refuse permission to join the walk if he thinks it would be unsuitable for you. We would rate this walk as an easy to medium, yet long day walk.
