This walk is being run specifically as a leaders training day, following Cherry’s suggestion to build confidence and capacity within the Club. The aim is simple - create more walk leaders. This is not an exploratory epic, but a structured off-track day focused on decision-making, navigation, pacing, risk assessment and group management. If you are interested in gain some skills and leading some walks for the Club, then this is the walk for you.
We will head to the Wallaman Falls escarpment for a half-day wander through open forest towards Butterfly Falls Lookout and views across to Hearts Falls. The terrain is generally forgiving - open woodland, light scrub and minor undulations - making it suitable for beginners who want to develop off-track skills in a manageable setting.
Everyone attending will navigate using GPS and map, and we will deliberately pause at key decision points to discuss route choices, hazards, turnaround triggers and contingency planning. The goal is mentoring in real terrain - not classroom theory.
This event is limited to members genuinely interested in leading future club walks. Participants should have attended a Club walk previously and willing to lead at least three trips for the Club.
Early start from Townsville (5:00 am departure), cooler air, clear objectives and a shared focus on building skills rather than just covering ground.
