Date: 08/10/23
Leader: Madoc Sheehan
Madoc will head up Saturday (7th) and stay the night and canyon trip will be Sunday (8th)…9am start at Wallaman falls campground. Can be done even if it rains but nicer in the dry.
Sunday:
We car pool to start of walk (i.e. bridge).
½ - 1 hr: off track walk to start of canyon….lawyer cane, so gloves are nice.
3-4hr: 2 short (10-15m) free hanging abseils into pools. Requires swim out of 2nd pool (puffed up dry bag helps). Relatively easy entry for abseils and very low to no risk of overhead falling rocks.
2hr: Walk back via butterfly falls track and side-visit to top of birdwing falls.
Drive back to campground…aim for 5pm.
Suitable for beginner abseilers but must be comfortable with exposure and heights and confident swimmers.
Rope, harnesses, biners and belay devices are sourced from Townsville rockclimbing club for all participants.
Helmets are encouraged. Participants to bring their own.
We have several experienced people in ropework. One to come along who can sit at the bottom of the rope and be the safety backup.
Madoc will be at the top and make sure everyone is safe and hooked on correctly before they go. We'll have capacity for top belay as well.
We will be tying people in at the top while they wait their turn.
Max participants: 10 (including myself and other experienced canyoners)…8 extras.
We request a bit of detail on your past experience when signing up/showing interest because we’ll vet the group.
Those who have never abseiled before to come up on the Saturday and go through a more straightforward trial run to get some familiarity with what to expect.
For Sunday - Bring: water, lunch, backpack with dry bag, spare clothes for walk out, repellant/sunscreen, gloves.
