Bell's Track // Wolfram Creek [Bike Ride]
Trip leader: Luen Warneke
Date: 9am Sunday 29th October
Location: Paluma Range Resources Reserve, North Queensland, Australia
Distance: ~10 km return
Duration: ~2 hours
Discover the intriguing history of Wolfram mining in the Paluma Range Resources Reserve, where we will ride along old mining tracks and past derelict mines, revealing a fascinating glimpse into North Queensland's past. Please be sure to exercise caution; the mines are no longer stable.
We'll head up the Paluma Range via Mount Spec Road (Paluma Range Road) to Wolfram Creek and take an overgrown road to the left. We will bike along this rough road to explore the historic mine sites. The roads are rough, and we may need to walk our bikes in sections. Expect loose soil and rocks with some steep inclines. Please wear the appropriate safety gear.
History: The first discovery of tungsten in the area was at Ollera Creek in 1895. Henry Bell and his family established a store and pack horse teams near Ollera Creek in the 1890s. Bell's Track is thought to be named after him. The Wolfram mines peaked in 1905 but were mostly abandoned by 1920 due to a slump in prices.
We urge visitors to respect this historic site. Please do not remove any relics or artefacts; let's keep the area as it is for future generations to appreciate. Take photos (and other people's rubbish) and leave only footprints (and a cleaner environment).
We are meeting at 9 am Sunday 29th Oct at the base of Paluma Range Road (Mount Spec Road) -18.984729, 146.296125
