About this event

7th September – Hermit Falls, Running River
Leader: Ian Wallace
RSVP: Ian Wallce at [email protected]
Walk Rating: Grade 5

Short Description:
10 km loop, off-track, thick bush, uneven ground, rock hopping and creek walking. Fit and experienced walkers only.

Important Notice:
We are attempting to get permits for Mount Spec Road for the day of the walk. Please do not get your own permits unless requested by the walk leader, as this will impact our ability to host the walk.

Walk Description:
Cross-country woodland, then creek rock hopping and scrambling – no tracks. Terrain includes uneven footing, rock hopping, scrambling, bush bashing, steep climbs, creek walking, some exposed ledges, and long grass. This is a remote area with no facilities and no mobile phone reception.

Cross-country bushwalking to the creek, walk along the creek to Hermit Falls, a wonderful waterfall where we will take a morning tea break and a swim. From the top of the falls, we will walk along the creek and through bush for about 1.5 hours to reach a rapids and gully site for lunch. Then walk cross-country direct to the road, and return along the road back to cars.

Full day walk. Estimate back at the cars around 4:30 pm, ready for the 2+ hour drive back to Townsville.

What to Bring:
Day pack, food/snacks for the day, minimum 4 litres of water (note this is cattle country: if refilling from the creek, treat well before drinking), long-sleeve clothing and rugged footwear (to protect from sun, scratches, stings, and bites), walking poles if required, electrolytes, insect repellent (leeches, mozzies), hat, sunscreen, personal first aid kit (basic, if available), personal medications, and sunglasses. Also head torch and whistle.
