[email protected]Join Cherry for a challenging full-day walk to the summit of Mount Halifax, one of the highest and most prominent peaks north of Townsville. Rising to 1,063 metres, Mount Halifax is the mountain often seen behind the pineapple farms near Rollingstone and from the Bruce Highway on the way to Paluma.
This is a strenuous walk with a big climb, rough terrain, creek crossings, rock-hopping, steep ridgelines, loose surfaces, and a long descent. The lower section follows a rocky jungle creek with small waterfalls and waterholes, before the route climbs steeply through changing vegetation, including rainforest, she-oaks, grass trees, exposed ridges, and upper rainforest near the summit.
On a clear day, the views from the upper ridges and summit area are excellent, with outlooks across the Paluma Range, the coastline, Palm Island group, Hinchinbrook Island in the distance, and the country back toward Townsville.
This walk is rated Grade 5 and is not suitable for beginners. Participants should be fit, have previous bushwalking experience, and be comfortable with long climbs, rough ground, slippery rocks, steep ascents and descents, and a full day in remote terrain. The walk will start early to make the most of daylight, and if progress is slower than expected, the leader may decide to turn the group around before the summit.

* At least 3 L of water, plus a way to treat creek water if needed
