We are heading back up to the Wallaman Falls area for a short, exploratory half-day wander through open bushland.
We will leave Townsville at 5:00 am sharp on Saturday 21 February and carpool up to the Wallaman Falls camping ground. From there, we will head off-track through relatively open forest, making our way toward Butterfly Falls Lookout and then on to a small peak with views across to Hearts Falls - staying outside the restricted zone at all times.
This is not the tourist track version of Wallaman. Expect a mostly flat walk through open woodland with sections of light scrub and minor angulations. The terrain is generally forgiving, but there will be uneven ground, loose leaf litter and the usual North Queensland surprises underfoot. Good navigation, situational awareness and long sleeves are recommended.
Distance will be modest and the pace steady. This is intended as a short half-day walk, with time to explore lookouts, enjoy views across the Herbert River Valley and return to the campground before late morning heat builds.
Bring:
At least 1.5-2 L of water
Morning tea
Hat and sun protection
Long sleeves and pants
Sturdy footwear
First Aid Kit and PLB
Wallaman Falls is Australia's tallest single-drop waterfall at 268 m, but this walk is about the broader landscape - the dry open forest, escarpment edges and those dramatic side-on views into the gorge system that most visitors never see.
RSVP details will be circulated to the group. Early start, cooler air, and a quiet escarpment before the crowds arrive - that is the plan.
