Mt Spec Orchids
Image @Tracy Zessin
This time of year native orchids are in flower, and golden-bower birds bowers are active. So a great
time for a rainforest walk in Mt Spec area to view orchids and a golden-bower bird bower. If we are
lucky, and very quiet and stealthy, maybe we can sight a gold-bower bird ? (very infrequent to sight
though, especially with group of people).
Leader - Keith
Rated - Medium. Track walking in rainforest. Moderate hill climbs. Distance about 22 km.
Meet – Paluma Dam at 0815. [ MUST get in touch with Keith via email and let him know first please]
Must be over 18 years to participate
Non-members (Visitor) fee $5
The Route –
At leaders discretion on the day – aimless wandering ? Aiming for Buttercup lookout at
Mt Spec, through the old tin mining area at Gardes, towards Foxlee’s Lookout as well (we may not
go as far as the Foxlee’s Lookout, see how things go on the day).
Water – bring water for a full day walking. Refill from creeks near Gardes / DCK is available, but the
club recommends that water resupply from natural sources is suitably treated before consumption).
Insect repellent for leeches and mozzies (leeches were hungry / active on Blue Gum last Sunday).
Anticipate back at Paluma Dam around 5 pm.
So what type of native orchids might we see ? I am no expert (so should shut-up lol). But – obviously
Buttercup orchids at Buttercup Lookout (that’s an easy one lol), Rock orchids (on rocks, believe it or
not, especially at some open creeks like Crystal Creek Falls), Christmas orchid (bit too early for it to
flower though, usually see it over summer) plus a few others. A very good link to assist identification
by Jamie Oliver is published at Rainforest Biodiversity: 5 easy species Part 8 – Orchids – Paluma – our
village in the mist
