[email protected]Cherry will be leading a challenging day walk to Godwin's Peak, one of the most rewarding summits in the Paluma Range National Park area. Sitting at 783 metres elevation, Godwin's Peak offers spectacular 360-degree views across Mount Halifax, Townsville, the coastline, Mount Stuart, Castle Hill, Magnetic Island, and the surrounding ranges on a clear day.
The route begins along forestry vehicle tracks through Clement State Forest before entering rougher bushwalking terrain, with creek crossings, rock hopping, waterfalls, and a long, steep climb toward the summit. Highlights along the way include Twin Falls, Pick Falls, changing vegetation as the route gains elevation, and the open grassy summit with its impressive panoramic views.
This walk is rated Grade 5 and should be considered difficult and strenuous. The track is rough, uneven, steep, and sometimes more of a marked route than a well-formed trail. The climb is slow-going, especially near the upper ridgeline, and walkers should be comfortable with long distances, remote terrain, loose surfaces, creek crossings, and a full day in the bush. Moderate to high fitness and previous bushwalking experience are strongly recommended.
Bring:
- At least 3 L of water, plus a way to treat/filter creek water if needed
- Lunch and plenty of snacks
- Sturdy footwear with good grip
- Hat and sun protection
- Raincoat and warm layer, as the summit can be cool or wet
- First aid kit and compression bandage
- Head torch, in case the walk takes longer than expected
- Insect repellent
- Swimmers, if you would like a creek swim
- Dry bag for items you do not want to get wet
- Change of clothes for the trip home
